Reflux
Unpacked
An evidence-based CPD course on paediatric reflux for clinicians working with infants and children. We work through the research in each area — from the GORD label to the gut microbiome, the swallow and management — and critically appraise what it actually shows.

Is This Course for You?
This course is for any clinician whose caseload includes infants or children with reflux — whether you're diagnosing, assessing, managing, or supporting families through it. Wherever you sit, the aim is the same: to look at the research in each area and weigh up what it actually shows.
Speech & Language Therapists
Reflux shapes the oral and pharyngeal phases you assess every day — yet it's rarely taught from a swallowing angle.
Paediatricians, GPs & Nurses
One of the most common conditions you see and prescribe for — so it's worth knowing what the evidence actually shows.
Dietitians, Nutritionists & IBCLCs
So much of reflux is about feeding, allergy and the gut — the areas you already work in, now grounded in the research.
Health Visitors
You're often the first person a worried family speaks to, so knowing what's normal and what needs referral really matters.
Students & Newly Qualified Clinicians
Reflux comes up constantly on caseload — build a solid, evidence-based foundation before you're faced with it.

What We'll Cover
Five modules that work through the evidence area by area — flagging the strength of each study and where the findings are still emerging or contested rather than settled. The focus throughout is on critically appraising what the research actually shows, not just restating the guidelines.
Understanding Reflux
What reflux actually is and where the labels come from — GOR, GORD and silent reflux, what NICE NG1 covers and where it ends, prevalence, differential diagnosis, and the suggestion that GORD may be a symptom rather than a diagnosis in its own right.
Why Do Babies & Children Get Reflux?
The anatomy and physiology behind reflux — the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) and transient relaxations (TLESRs), stomach acid, the gut microbiome, the allergy and CMPA overlap, feeding mode and mechanics (tongue tie and aerophagia), and higher-risk groups such as preterm and neurologically impaired children.
Reflux & The Swallow
The swallow — the oral phase and its surprising relationship with reflux, the pharyngeal phase and aspiration risk, and the reflux–aversion cycle that can drive feeding aversion — appraising the evidence behind each.
Assessment
Recognising reflux across different ages, the diagnostic investigations and what each one can and can't tell you — pH-MII, barium, endoscopy — and how each member of the MDT contributes to assessment.
Management: Where We Are & Where We're Going
Conservative and positioning measures, allergy management, thickeners (efficacy vs risk), the PPI and H2RA prescribing evidence and the cost of long-term acid suppression, emerging microbiome-centric approaches, body-based approaches, and management in older children and those with additional needs.
Why We Built This
Reflux is one of the most common presentations in paediatric practice, and one where the evidence is often messier than the guidelines suggest. Most of us leave training with a working knowledge of NICE NG1 — but there's a lot the guidance doesn't cover, and a lot that's still being debated.
So this course takes each area in turn and looks at the research behind it — GOR vs GORD, TLESRs, the oral and pharyngeal phase findings, what the trials actually show on PPI prescribing in infants, the emerging microbiome work, and how it all fits together. We're clear about the strength of each study and where the findings are still emerging or contested, so you can weigh the evidence for yourself rather than take a single line as settled.
You don’t have to have all the answers. You have to show up with genuine curiosity and a willingness to keep looking.

Meet Your Instructor
I’m Savannah — a specialist paediatric SLT and IBCLC who has spent my career working with infants and children with feeding and swallowing difficulties, and running a private practice grounded in evidence and whole-child care.
Savannah Senior
Paediatric SLT & IBCLC
Savannah trained in South Africa and holds a BSc in Speech and Language Therapy and an MSc in Advanced Paediatrics. She is also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), trained in the SOS Approach to Feeding Therapy, a SOFFI Certified professional, and has completed additional training in Makaton.
She has worked in the UK for over a decade with paediatric feeding, swallowing and dysphagia, and runs Learn to Feed. As a mother who navigated tongue tie, breastfeeding difficulties, and multiple allergies with her own son, she brings both clinical expertise and lived experience to everything she teaches. She is known for her warm, whole-child approach and for turning overwhelming clinical information into clear, practical steps.
Questions You Might Have
Who is this course designed for?
Reflux Unpacked was created for any clinician whose caseload includes infants or children with reflux — SLTs, paediatricians, GPs, nurses, dietitians, nutritionists, IBCLCs, and health visitors. It works for newly qualified clinicians building their foundation, as well as more experienced professionals who want to fill specific knowledge gaps or understand the clinical picture more fully.
What level is this course pitched at?
We've designed it to be accessible without being surface-level. You don't need specialist reflux experience to follow along — a basic clinical background is enough. But we haven't watered down the evidence, so there's real depth if you want it. Most participants find it sits well across a broad range of clinical experience.
Does this course make me competent to manage reflux independently?
This course gives you a thorough clinical foundation — the diagnostic framework, the evidence base and how to appraise it, the MDT picture, and how the swallow fits in. What you do with that knowledge in practice will depend on your role and your setting, but you'll leave better equipped to engage with these cases confidently and contribute meaningfully within your team.
Is this suitable for CPD?
This is a substantive, evidence-based course developed by experienced clinicians. We'd recommend checking with your employer or professional body about how they recognise self-directed CPD, as requirements can vary across settings and professions.
How long will I have access?
6 months from the date of enrolment. Work through it at your own pace — come back to individual modules as cases arise on your caseload. It's designed to be a resource you return to, not a course you watch once and move on from.
Can I get a refund?
Yes — we offer a 14-day refund policy, provided you haven't accessed more than 30% of the course content. We want you to feel confident in your purchase.
